FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions about our Jiu Jitsu Programs

What is Jiu-Jitsu?

Jiu-Jitsu is a submission based martial art and combat sport. It’s central focus is the skill of taking an opponent to the ground, controlling that opponent and using techniques to force them into submission via joint locks or chokeholds.

What is the difference between Gracie Jiu-Jitsu and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu ?

The Gracie Family initially named the art after their founding members. They were originally from Brazil and as the art/sport grew the art later took the name of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The art has become more known to the world now and it is practiced in all parts of the world and often now it’s simply called Jiu-Jitsu.

Do you need any experience?

No prior martial arts experience is necessary. Rampart Academy is a beginner friendly environment where fundamentals are a component of each class. Every one works and advances at their pace regardless of age and physical ability. All our students are expected to encourage a positive learning experience for all.

I heard it is intimidating to take Jiu-Jitsu

-Like any new sport the body and the brain have to make a connection with the new movements, strategies, and techniques. This is why our classes are taught in a way where the students are primed with the basics needed to execute the techniques that are being taught to build confidence and provide the body the ability to perform these new movements and techniques.

What is the difference between Gi and No Gi?

-Training with the Gi consists of training with a Japanese Style Kimono made specifically for Jiu-Jitsu. The Gi allows many control aspects because of the strength in being able to grab a strong material. Training no gi has many of the same principles but one has to adapt their training without the strong control aspects that the Gi provide

Should I start Gi or No gi?

I would suggest to start with our fundamental classes which are also in the Gi. The control aspects of the Gi foster a slower and more controlled pace for beginners which helps in figuring things out especially if you are new to the art.

What equipment should I wear to class?

Initially, all you need to wear is comfortable clothing like a dry wick shirt and shorts or tracksuit bottoms. Once you decide to train more you can then purchase a Kimono, rash guard and fight shorts.

Is it safe for my child to train?

-ABSOLUTELY !!!!

The children’s program from 5 to 8 year olds is designed for children that are still in their developmental years. The 9 to 13 year olds youth program is designed for young athletes. Safety, cleanliness and discipline is of extreme importance with these classes as well as making them challenging yet fun.

Can I train with my child?

Teen age youth are encouraged to also take the adult fundamental classes and parents and kids can take these classes together.

Lost my vocal cords today at Grappling Industries at Rahway, and my heart is finally settled down. Two years ago, when I first started the school, I had no idea how strong my heart would be pulled by all the little ones in the kids' program.

Starting from scratch was both challenging, but between them and I, we made it our own. Today was the first time we went out with them as a school, and they truly gave it their all !

The kids were able to obtain x3 gold medals, x1 silver, and x1 bronze.

Also, I'm super proud of our three adults who competed (who are also our little kids' program assistant coaches) and together they obtained x2 gold medals and x2 silver medals in both Gi and no-gi.

Two big milestones for us today as Dylan is the school's first competitor to win double gold, and Melissa is our first blue belt gold winner.

We are definitely progressing, and I can't wait to witness the continued evolution of all their individual art.

Thank you to everyone who came out to support and big thank you to Kevin, Jess, Justin, and Jim for the huge help with coaching today !
